Choose Havana

  • For the friendly atmosphere of the Cuban people
  • For the cultural heritage
  • For a nice climate all year long and excellent food
  • For an authentic taste of the Caribbean
  • For the beautiful landscape and beaches
  • For outdoors activities, excellent sea food and fresh fruits

Havana was founded in 1519 by the Spanish. By the 17th century, it had become one of the Caribbean's main centers for ship-building. Although it is today a sprawling metropolis of 2 million inhabitants, its old centre retains an interesting mix of Baroque and neoclassical monuments, and a homogeneous ensemble of private houses with arcades, balconies, wrought-iron gates and internal courtyards.

Many of Old Havana's finest buildings have been converted into museums, and there are churches, palaces, castles, revolutionary monuments and markets to visit; however, the renovations are only slowly extending to residential areas.

The most outstanding sights include the Plaza de la Catedral, one of the most beautiful squares in the city, with the towers of the Catedral de San Cristóbal de La Habana which dominate the square. Nearby is the Castillo de la Real Fuerza, the oldest extant colonial fortress in the Americas: its west tower is crowned by a bronze weathervane dating back to 1632. La Giraldilla, as the nimble-figured wind-spinner is called, is believed to be Doña Inés de Bobadilla, waiting in vain for her husband, the explorer Hernando de Soto, who set off to Florida looking for the Fountain of Youth and died eaten by cannibals.

Cuba is an archipelago of islands located in the Caribbean Sea. The main island of Cuba constitutes most of the nation's land area, that is105,006 km, and is the seventeenth-largest island in the world by land area. Cuba’s climate is mild subtropical. Average temperature throughout the year varies between 20 ºC (68 ºF) and 35 ºC (95 ºF), decreasing sometimes to 10 °C (50 ºF). Peak seasons for travelers are Christmas, Easter, July and August.
